Lelo: Detroit Techno Meets Rap

Released a short month ago, Lelo dropped his new album Mastiff: Pink Tiles. The Pink Tiles edition of his Mastiff album contained a 2nd disc that has become a repeat in my listening rotation. I have always known Lelo for having top tier beats, from “Kudos” to his well-known “No contempt”, but Pink Tiles has a new vibe.

As someone who loves dance music, it’s safe to say Lelo successfully cultivated a new sound in that 2nd disc. He used beats with Detroit techno elements that truly capture that electronic/bounce vibe that can be listened to just about anywhere. With curated events and DJ’s becoming more diverse in their sound selection, these types of sounds could truly jumpstart, and maintain, various types of events.

I fully appreciate Lelo’s experimental approach when he chooses his beats. If you are a new and fresh Lelo fan, I would start with the “New Detroit” album, that way you can fully gauge his artistry and his “go-to” sound. With listening to the Mastiff album, play it in its entirety in chronological order. Ending off on that 2nd disc, with that “ghetto tech” vibe, allows you to capture the intention of the album. Lelo Is truly an artist that should be appreciated for his work.
